Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić dissolved parliament yesterday and called an early parliamentary election for October 25.
“Were elections necessary for us? If there had not been these tensions, if there had not been these political conflicts, they certainly would not have been necessary,” Vučić said in a televised address. He added that any delay in holding the election “would threaten the survival of democracy.”
Vučić will run for prime minister in an effort to extend his time in power. He has led the country since 2014, first as prime minister from 2014 to 2017 and then as president since 2017.
During his time in power, Serbia has experienced a period of economic growth, but Vučić has faced strong criticism over corruption and authoritarianism.
