Yesterday’s irrevocable decision by the Supreme Court Prosecutor’s Office (SCPO) to archive the part of the wiretapping case [1],[2],[3] involving the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and other state agencies has triggered political reactions.
In a social media post, Stefanos Kasselakis said that following yesterday’s decision, “my confidence in Greek justice has been severely undermined.” Meanwhile, Socrates Famellos, President of SYRIZA’s Parliamentary Group, described the decision as “another step in the cover-up of this major democratic scandal, which will further erode public trust in the justice system.”
Journalists from media outlets such as Inside Story and Reporters United, who have alleged being victims of surveillance, have disputed the SCPO’s findings with evidence.
In a statement, the KKE criticized the “whitewashing” through the so-called ‘independent’ judiciary—whose leadership is appointed by the current government—and the so-called ‘independent’ authorities.
Alexis Charitsis, leader of the New Left, remarked after yesterday’s development that “this is the final step in a government plan that has, from the outset, aimed to convince us that there was never any scandal.” Additionally, Zoe Konstantopoulou, President of Plefsi Eleftherias, stated in a parliamentary intervention that “once again, the Supreme Court prosecutors have proven to be inadequate to the circumstances.”
For its part, the government stated that “from the very beginning, we made it clear that we awaited the judiciary’s decisions, which has been a consistent position of the government.” It further emphasized that “we look forward to hearing the opinions of those who had rushed to condemn officials and political figures before the judicial ruling.”
