Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated D. Trump on his election victory and said he was ready to open “a dialogue” to restore the countries’ relations.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, also congratulated Trump on his “impressive victory” despite concerns that Trump’s plan to end the war is to stop military aid to Ukraine. Without US military assistance, Ukraine risks losing further ground in the Donetsk region as well as in many other frontline areas.

Ukraine wants an invitation to join NATO before the end of Biden’s term, while the outgoing US president had said that Ukraine is “not ready.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that one idea floated by Trump’s team is to freeze their current front lines and force Kyiv to abandon any talk of Ukraine joining NATO for 20 years. In return, the US would continue to supply Ukraine with weapons to deter further Russian attacks.

Ukraine’s allies within the EU (e.g., Germany) stress the need for unity after Trump’s election, while Putin’s allies, such as Hungarian Prime Minister V. Orban, are celebrating the result.
