Protests begin today in Thessaloniki and are expected to peak on Saturday, when the prime minister is due to speak at 8 p.m. and the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) officially opens.
Public hospital and healthcare workers were the first to take to the streets, gathering at Ippokrateio Hospital before marching through central Thessaloniki. Emergency ambulance service (EKAV) workers are also due to hold a rally outside the Ministry of Interior’s Macedonia-Thrace division at 11 a.m.
At 6 p.m., security forces federations will gather at the White Tower, while the Thessaloniki Hospital Doctors’ Association (ENITH) has called a rally outside Papanikolaou Hospital at 6:30 p.m.
The main protests are expected on Saturday. At 11:30 a.m., two federations representing public-sector engineers are due to hold a rally outside the Ministry of Interior’s Macedonia-Thrace division.
The 90th Thessaloniki International Fair opens tomorrow with more than 1,000 exhibitors, participants from 25 countries and Japan as the guest of honour for the first time.
At 5 p.m., the Nationwide Committee of Farmers’ Blockades will hold a rally at the White Tower. At 5:30 p.m., PAME will hold a rally at YMCA Square, where relatives of the victims of the Tempi train crash and pensioners’ organisations will also gather. At 6 p.m., GSEE, the Thessaloniki Labour Centre (ECT) and ADEDY will hold a rally at the Venizelos Statue.
At the same time, extra-parliamentary left-wing groups and members of the anti-authoritarian movement have called for a gathering at Kamara.
The gatherings are expected to turn into marches through central Thessaloniki, causing significant traffic disruption, while more than 3,500 police officers will be on alert.
