A prosecutorial investigation has been ordered [1], [2], [3] regarding the dead fish in Pagasitikos Gulf following the circulation of images and videos and the resulting concern in the local community.

Under its supervision, the Volos Prosecutor’s Office has instructed the Central Port Authority of Volos Chief to conduct analyses at an accredited chemical laboratory to determine whether the seawater is contaminated and if Lake Karla is the source of the problem.

Additionally, the investigation will examine the circumstances of the fish deaths, determining whether they arrive in Pagasitikos Gulf already dead via the Xirias Dam or die due to environmental changes. It will also explore the possibility of a substance entering the fish’s system.

Simultaneously, the inquiry will assess the actions taken by the Municipality of Volos and the Region of Thessaly in the areas where the dead fish were discovered.

Local authorities have decided to remove the dead fish using fishing boats and to close the Xirias Dam to prevent the fish from reaching Pagasitikos Gulf.

According to experts, the problem is caused by water from Lake Karla and its surrounding areas that flows daily through the Xirias stream into Pagasitikos Gulf. This water also carries thousands of freshwater fish, which die when they come into contact with the seawater.

In a meeting held yesterday at the Volos Port Authority (OLV), the following decisions were made:

  • The Volos Port Authority (OLV) will manage the removal of dead fish from the port of Volos.
  • Fishing boats will continue removing the dead fish until next week.
  • A large net will be installed at the mouth of the Xirias stream to prevent the dead fish from reaching Pagasitikos Gulf.
  • Staff will begin cleaning the mouth of the Xirias stream.
