Insufficient available electricity generation capacity, outages at power generation units, and increased demand have led to rolling power outages in Cyprus, while additional power cuts in the coming days remain possible.
The outages occurred in the evening when available generation capacity was insufficient to meet demand. The Transmission System Operator implemented power cuts lasting 20 to 30 minutes for households and businesses while heatwave conditions prevailed.
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) continues repair works on units at the Vasilikos and Dhekelia power stations. If the units do not return to operation in time, further outages may be necessary, particularly during the evening hours.
The problem of electricity supply adequacy has been highlighted for at least the past two to three years.
During the day, electricity generated by photovoltaic systems contributes significantly to meeting demand. However, after sunset, solar generation declines and, due to the lack of storage capacity, the system relies on the EAC’s conventional power units. At the same time, limited wind generation has been insufficient to cover the shortfall.
The problem of electricity supply adequacy has been highlighted by energy sector stakeholders for at least the past two to three years.
Meanwhile, the sixth combined-cycle unit at Vasilikos cannot be utilised because there is no capacity to import natural gas. With high temperatures expected to continue, an uninterrupted electricity supply cannot be considered guaranteed.
