The Government Spokesperson, Pavlos Marinakis, said that “We are not going to go back to discussions that have been settled. […] Every woman, every person is responsible for defining their own body, full stop.”
On its part, PASOK reminded that “the issue of abortions has been definitively settled. The PASOK government of Andreas Papandreou, with Law 1609/1986, made real the right of every woman to decide safely for herself about her own body.”
The right to abortion (lawful termination of an unwanted pregnancy) was established in 1986, although it had been in force for specific cases since 1978.
The Press Spokesperson of SYRIZA-PS, Kostas Zachariadis, stressed that only the far right questions the conquest of the right to abortion, since fundamental individual and human rights are neither questioned nor put up for public consultation.
At the same time, supportive of the positions of Maria Karystianou appeared the independent MP of Thessaloniki, formerly of “Niki,” Nikos Papadopoulos, and the lawyer of Maria Karystianou, Stelios Sourlas.
