Police made three arrests over the arson attacks on the homes of New Democracy officials in Thessaloniki, which resulted in the death of Vagia Nestora, the mother of New Democracy political candidate Afroditi Nestora.
A woman was arrested in Crete and a man in Thessaloniki, both accused of involvement in the attack on Afroditi Nestora’s home, while another man was arrested in Thessaloniki for harboring the suspects.
The woman is 26 years old and, according to media reports, had previously come to the authorities’ attention over alleged involvement in the group “Anarchist Action,” following an arson attack on the “Institute of National and Religious Reflection.” The man arrested in Thessaloniki and also accused of involvement in the arson attack on Afroditi Nestora’s home is likewise reported to come from the city’s anarchist scene.
In addition to Afroditi Nestora’s home, the other attacks targeted the residences of Z. Ioakeimovits and S. Anastasiadis.
According to police, the third suspect provided them with his apartment to prepare for the attack and as a hideout immediately afterward.
All three are expected to face charges including offences under anti-terrorism legislation and homicide.
Vagia Nestora’s funeral was held yesterday in Kozani, attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis, among others. Afroditi Nestora, who remains hospitalized at Hippocrates Hospital with burns from the attack, attended her mother’s funeral in a wheelchair.
