What happens when twenty artistic orbits, thirteen poetic voices and centuries of celestial knowledge come together beneath a glass sky?
The group exhibition Synastry, curated by Kostas Prapoglou, who also wrote the accompanying text, draws our attention to one of humanity’s oldest desires: the need to connect distant points, recognise patterns in the unknown and find meaning in what lies beyond us. Long before the development of science and organised systems of knowledge, the sky was the first great canvas of human imagination. It gave rise to myths, fears, desires and stories that continue to shape our understanding of the world.
The exhibition takes the term “synastry” and broadens it into a way of exploring relationships, affinities and unexpected connections. Twenty visual artists draw inspiration from planets, constellations and cosmic narratives, creating works that bring together mythology, scientific observation, personal experience and collective memory.
The programme spans prominent cultural and scientific venues across Athens.
Interspersed among the artworks are poems by thirteen contemporary poets from Greece. Their verses introduce moments in which time seems to stand still, accompanying visitors through the exhibition like constellations of language. Selected manuscripts and rare books on cosmography, astronomy and astrology from the Special Collections of the National Library of Greece also shed light on humanity’s long relationship with the heavens.
Through the Library’s glass roof, the real sky becomes part of the exhibition experience. Natural light, clouds and the changing light of day accompany the works, reminding visitors that observation remains a living process.
At the heart of Synastry is the possibility of an unexpected connection: the moment when an artwork, a verse or a page meets a personal memory and suddenly feels familiar. Visitors are invited to follow their own paths and, by connecting the dots, discover their own constellation.
At the Eugenides Foundation Planetarium, visitors will have the opportunity to take part in “Live Tours of Space”, on dates to be announced.
The programme extends across prominent cultural and scientific venues in Athens. Before the exhibition officially opens, the National Observatory of Athens, Greece’s first research centre, will host a special event at its main facilities on the Hill of the Nymphs in Thiseio, bringing artists into direct contact with the scientific observation of the sky. The event will also include night-sky observation, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the universe through the National Observatory’s historic telescopes.
The exhibition’s main sponsor is PPC (DEI), which supports this project bringing together art, poetry and science and creating new opportunities for public engagement. PPC has consistently supported culture and contemporary artistic creation, backing initiatives and artists who offer the public distinctive cultural experiences. With its belief in art’s ability to inspire, connect and motivate, PPC continues its commitment to culture through its #metonPolitismo initiative, supporting efforts that help shape a better future.
At the Eugenides Foundation Planetarium, visitors will have the opportunity to take part in “Live Tours of Space”, on dates to be announced. The tours use the Planetarium’s advanced spaceflight simulation system to combine scientific knowledge with the sensation of travelling through space, extending the central idea of Synastry into the universe itself.
On Saturday, September 26, under the light of the full moon, the new Stoa Arsakeiou will host a poetry evening. The poets participating in Synastry will read works written specifically for the project in the arcade’s atrium. Poetry will meet the night sky, bringing the exhibition’s journey into the heart of Athens and giving voice to the constellations of language. A musical event dedicated to the full moon will follow.
To ensure equal access to art, the exhibition includes tactile interpretations of artworks, audio narration and specially designed materials, allowing visitors with visual impairments to experience the works through different senses.
Synastry was conceived and initiated by Lefteris Moisiadis, Founder and Project Manager, who developed the original concept and oversaw the project’s development and overall management. Organisation and production are handled by Tsakalou P.R. Agency.
