Argentina’s Patagonia is attracting investors looking for locations to build data centres, specially designed buildings or facilities that house large numbers of servers and other systems.

As technology giants known as hyperscalers race to build large server facilities around the world and face opposition to data centres, projects still in their early stages in Argentina are moving forward without attracting much public attention.

Patagonia’s low temperatures, renewable energy resources and vast uninhabited areas make the region suitable for such facilities.

Patagonia lies at the southern end of South America and is known for its mountain peaks, desert landscapes and vast glaciers.

As Argentinians have yet to experience the effects of large data centres, the country has not seen the kind of opposition that has emerged in the US. There, data centres have faced strong opposition over their environmental impact, pressure on power grids and rising electricity bills for residents.

Supporters, on the other hand, say these facilities are necessary for the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, generate significant tax revenue for local communities and can be made more sustainable.
