Today, the President of PASOK, N. Androulakis, in his letter to the President of the Parliament, N. Kaklamanis, asks that a plenary session be convened to discuss the current situation in Palestine and Greece’s recognition of the State of Palestine.
In his letter, he states: “In the face of flagrant violations of International Law and International Humanitarian Law, with tragic humanitarian consequences, the Hellenic Parliament cannot but raise its own distinct voice against human suffering, destruction, and systematic ethnic cleansing – without balances and equal distances in the face of horror.”
France, Canada and the United Kingdom have announced that they will recognize the State of Palestine in September, at the UN General Assembly.
The aim is to update and reaffirm the Special Resolution of Parliament in favor of recognition, which was voted on 22.12.2015, in the presence of Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas.
SYRIZA accused N. Androulakis of “breaking” the progressive front and acting alone. Last Thursday, the President of SYRIZA took the initiative for joint action by the parties of the progressive opposition to end Israel’s invasion in Gaza and for Greece to recognize the Palestinian state.
In its statement, SYRIZA noted that its call “was positively received by the President of Nea Aristera (New Left), Alexis Haritsis, and the President of Plefsi Eleftherias (Course of Freedom), Zoe Konstantopoulou, while the KKE (Communist Party of Greece) reiterated the already existing joint declaration of the four parties on Palestine. Mr. Androulakis was the only political leader who did not respond at all to Socrates Famellos’ outreach, citing as an excuse his tour of the fire-ravaged areas of Achaia.”
