One in six children in Greece self-harms (14%-22% internationally) according to studies, and until now there was no specialized center in our country for providing support and counseling.
Self-harm is defined as “the infliction of immediate harm/injury to the surface of the body, in moments when the individual experiences psychological distress, feelings of emptiness, anger, and other unpleasant emotions, which they are unable to tolerate and handle in appropriate ways.”
Soon the first Community Center for Youth Mental Health will be officially presented, which focuses on addressing self-harm and is created on the initiative of the Ministry of Health and the Deputy Minister, Eirini Agapidakis.
The Center has also been included in the Recovery Fund and will operate in collaboration with UNICEF and top academic institutions of the country.
The Center is already operational, between 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Monday to Friday, with contact numbers 210-74.62.290 and 210-74.62.281.
Along with the official presentation, an awareness campaign will begin, targeting young people and families facing this problem, in order to communicate that they can receive specialized help for the problem they are facing.
The center, which is already operating before its presentation, is under the responsibility of the 1st University Psychiatric Clinic of NKUA.
Meanwhile, the issue has also taken on dimensions on social media, as many videos of young people with self-harm advice are circulating. Videos are also circulating of young people who have overcome the problem and give relevant advice.
