The 54th Book Fair at Pedion tou Areos was officially opened yesterday by President of the Hellenic Republic Konstantinos Tasoulas, with a message highlighting the importance of reading and the role of books in shaping active and responsible citizens. The fair, which opened on September 4 and runs until September 20, is being held this year under the theme “Sustainable Development: The Book as an Architect of Tomorrow.”
In his speech, Tasoulas stressed that books can serve as tools for knowledge, critical thinking and democratic participation, particularly at a time when the dominance of images and the digital environment is challenging younger generations’ relationship with reading. He noted that reading develops not only critical thinking but also the ability to understand complex social, technological and environmental challenges.
This year’s fair is being held under the theme “Sustainable Development: The Book as an Architect of Tomorrow.”
The fair features 285 stands and 210 publishing houses from across Greece, presenting new releases, classics, essays, comics and children’s literature. The programme also includes workshops, performances, shadow theatre, music events, book presentations and discussions. Highlights include a three-day programme dedicated to debut authors and special events organised by the Greek Comics Academy.
The fair is open Monday to Thursday from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Admission is free.
