STASY has launched a tender process to install air conditioning systems on some of the oldest trains operating on Metro Lines 2 and 3, which have been in service for 26 years. However, the process is expected to take at least three years.
This practically means that, for three or more years, during the summer and on days of high temperatures, these trains will remain unbearably hot and stuffy.
“The afternoon I happened to board one of these trains, the situation was unbearable because the carriages were also packed,” a metro passenger who commutes daily between Syntagma and Doukissis Plakentias told Kathimerini.
Metro Lines 2 and 3 are the Red Line (Anthoupoli – Elliniko) and the Blue Line (Airport – Dimotiko Theatro), respectively.
The project will cost €109 million and, of the 28 older trains currently in operation, air conditioning will be installed on 12.
According to Kathimerini, there are 52 operational trains in total on Metro Lines 2 and 3. The first-generation fleet consists of 28 trains, 20 of which currently operate on Lines 2 and 3, as four trains have been withdrawn from service and another four have been transferred to ISAP to reinforce Metro Line 1 (the Electric Railway). These are the only STASY trains that do not have air conditioning in passenger areas.
According to STASY, once the project is completed, fleet availability will also increase, as upgrading the four non-operational trains will become a priority.
