The United States launched a new and extensive wave of airstrikes against Iran on Thursday, marking the resumption of major military operations after several days of reduced tensions. According to US Central Command, dozens of targets belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were hit, including military command centres.
Washington described the strikes as retaliation for Iranian attacks on US bases in Jordan. Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, reported raids on the cities of Abadan, Shadegan, Arvandkenar and Ahvaz in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, as well as on the strategically important island of Qeshm in the Persian Gulf.
Only one in three Americans supports the US war in Iran, which has so far cost the country $37.5 billion.
Meanwhile, Jordan announced that it had intercepted five Iranian missiles, with no casualties reported. A day earlier, the United States and Saudi Arabia reportedly struck pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, killing at least 20 fighters and six Iranian advisers. Riyadh had previously reported drone attacks on oil facilities.
The escalation comes as the five-month war continues to receive limited public support in the United States. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that only one in three Americans supports the conflict, while 69% believe that Donald Trump has not clearly explained the objectives of US involvement.
