Yesterday’s Russian bombings on at least 20 locations in Kyiv left at least 23 people dead, including four children.
Donald Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, Keath Kellogg, said the attacks threaten the U.S. president’s proposals to end the war. “These horrific attacks threaten the peace that [Trump] is seeking,” he posted on social media, noting that they struck “innocent civilians” as well as EU and British missions in the Ukrainian capital.
It was the largest airstrike on Kyiv since the August 15 meeting between V. Putin and D. Trump in Alaska, and one of the biggest since the Russian invasion in 2022, with Ukraine targeted by at least 629 missiles and drones.
Putin and Trump had met in Alaska to discuss the prospect of peace between Russia and Ukraine.
Airstrikes on Kyiv had been relatively limited during August, when peace talks were underway.
Among the buildings destroyed or damaged were offices of the EU and the British Council.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack showed that Russia had no intention of negotiating an end to the war. “This is a clear response to all those who, for weeks and months, have been calling for a ceasefire and real diplomacy,” he said on social media. “Russia chooses ballistics over the negotiating table”.
