NATO fighter jets shot down a drone in Lithuanian airspace near a village outside the city of Kaunas.
According to Lithuania’s crisis management centre, the drone came from Belarus and was heading west.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda wrote early on Tuesday: “A drone that had just entered Lithuanian airspace was destroyed by NATO fighter jets. As Russia intensifies its aggression against Ukraine, such readiness is vital for our region.”
The Baltic states, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, have recorded drone incursions into their territory since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The incident triggered an alert in the capital, Vilnius, while fighter jets were also scrambled from Poland, where a suspected Russian drone found floating in Polish territorial waters had been recovered a day earlier.
The Baltic states, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, have recorded drone incursions into their territory since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In May, a NATO fighter jet shot down a Ukrainian drone over Estonia, the first interception of a foreign drone in the airspace of a Baltic state since 2022.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, September 13, a Russian drone struck a passenger train near Ukraine’s border with Poland, shortly after former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other foreign diplomats had used the same railway line.
