Yesterday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis gave an interview about the Tempi tragedy. During the interview, he said that everything is still open regarding the possibility that the commercial train may have been carrying illegal flammable material, something he had categorically rejected in earlier statements.

He explained that, regarding his earlier comments, he had been reassured by entities such as Hellenic Train and the Fire Department and emphasized that he is interested in finding out “if there was any contraband.” He made it clear that if there is suspicion of illegal material being transported, legal action will be taken against Hellenic Train, “which is responsible” and “will have to answer,” both criminally and politically.

Regarding the allegations of covering up, he mentioned that some decisions were made on the spot with “good intentions” to help rescuers locate the bodies but stressed that, in this case, the final decision rests with the judiciary.

Hellenic Train issued a statement that does not address the possibility of transporting flammable materials while pledging a “full investigation into the tragedy.”

Regarding the former Minister of Transport, Kostas Karamanlis, he stated that “the fact that he is a member of parliament does not affect in any way any potential criminal investigation regarding his role” and emphasized that if he is found to be involved in the case, the government will not obstruct any investigations against him.

On the Parliamentary Inquiry Committee for the Tempi tragedy, he said, “I don’t believe it was the best moment for Parliament.” Regarding the attacks on Maria Karystianou by New Democracy officials, he remarked, “Mrs. Karystianou lost her child. I am putting an end to this. […] Everyone should do the same. I bow my head and have nothing more to add.” Finally, he ruled out any possibility of resignation.
