The house in which Diego Armando Maradona lived in Buenos Aires with his family has been transformed by the current owner into a community kitchen. Argentina, in fact, had declared the house a National Historic Monument in 2021.
The house in Villa Fiorito, a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, no longer belongs to the family of Maradona, who died in 2020 from a heart attack, however in the last month the current owner has granted the yard with the dirt ground to a group of volunteers who light a grill and cook for the residents of the area.
The house in which Maradona grew up, one of the top footballers worldwide, is located in the poor neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Villa Fiorito.
Although poverty in Argentina decreased by January to 28.1% from 52.9% in 2024, many jobs were lost due to the austerity measures of the government of Javier Milei and the queues in community kitchens remain large. In 2023, the president Javier Milei had proceeded to a sharp devaluation of the peso, resulting in inflation surging.
Despite the reduction of poverty that the official data present, Argentina needs to see a greater increase of GDP in sectors such as mining, in contrast to capital-intensive sectors such as agriculture, stated Eduardo Donza, sociologist at the Catholic University of Argentina.
