On Saturday night, a 25-year-old man was found dead on the steps of Strefi Hill in Exarchia after being shot in the face.
Authorities are examining the possibility that the killing was a drug-related settling of scores, as the victim was of Turkish origin and known to Turkish authorities for offenses such as drug trafficking, although Greek authorities had not had any dealings with him since he arrived in Greece in 2024.
Another reason authorities are investigating the possibility of a contract-style killing is the fact that, as Efimerida ton Syntakton reports, in recent years a “war” has been underway between hardline Turkish organized-crime groups, with Greece and other European countries often becoming places where scores are settled.
Authorities are examining the possibility that the perpetrator had an accomplice, as some testimonies also refer to a second person who ran away after the shooting.
On March 15, in fact, three Turkish nationals were arrested, allegedly members of gangs involved in an attempted murder against another Turkish man in Nea Makri.
As for Exarchia, residents tell Efimerida ton Syntakton that in the neighborhood “we have police domination, but not policing.” At the same time, residents have in the past reported suspicious movements by groups that may be involved in drug trafficking to the local police station, but without result.
By contrast, they say, when it comes to mobilizations on Strefi Hill and other residents’ protests, police alertness is high.
