The main stage of the Tomorrowland electronic music festival in Boom, just outside Antwerp, Belgium, was completely destroyed by fire yesterday, one day before the scheduled arrival of some 100,000 festival campers.
Images shared on local news sites and social media showed flames and black smoke engulfing the stage and spreading into the nearby forest. There were no injuries, according to the organizers, while the Antwerp prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation but stated that it sees no evidence of foul play behind the cause of the fire.
Tomorrowland has been held for 20 years, attracting major names in electronic music, including this year David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren, and Charlotte de Witte.
Organizers confirmed that the festival will go ahead as planned this and next weekend, stating: “Due to a serious incident and fire on the Tomorrowland Mainstage, our beloved Mainstage has been severely damaged”.
They also noted that they are “looking for solutions,” as two-thirds of the DJ sets—by artists such as David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren, Charlotte de Witte, and Lost Frequencies—were to be shared between the Mainstage and the “Freedom” stage.
Tomorrowland, created 20 years ago by two Belgian brothers, has become a globally recognized brand and a major destination for fans of electronic dance music (EDM).
