Brazil’s centre-left president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, won yesterday’s election against far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, securing 51.79% of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 48.21% and a fourth term in office. Lula previously served two terms between 2003 and 2011 and a third from 2023 to 2026. He was imprisoned from 2018 to 2019 on corruption charges that were later overturned by the courts, paving the way for his victory over Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 election.

The result was unexpected, as the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro had won the first round and was the favourite to defeat Lula in opinion polls.

Flávio Bolsonaro’s refusal to concede defeat echoes his father’s response to losing the 2022 election to Lula.

Flávio Bolsonaro lost by more than four million votes, prompting volatility in Brazil’s financial markets, which had anticipated his victory.

Bolsonaro also refused to concede defeat and announced plans to seek the annulment of the election result, citing a two-hour extension of voting due to bad weather. According to Reuters, however, an annulment is considered highly unlikely.

His refusal to accept the result mirrors his father’s response to his 2022 electoral defeat by Lula, which Jair Bolsonaro never formally acknowledged.
