  1. Attica’s water reserves are at levels considered among the worst in the past 40 years, as the region’s four supply lakes (Mornos, Evinos, Yliki, Marathon) are collectively 74% empty.
  2. Experts told Kathimerini that two to three consecutive years of drought, such as during the period 2022–2025, are enough to halve the reserves, while reduced snowfall has also played a role.
  3. To avoid water shortages in Attica, EYDAP plans to implement measures such as desalination and water reuse.

Attica’s water reserves are at their lowest levels in 40 years, following the periods of 1990–1994 and 2001, as the region’s four supply lakes (Mornos, Evinos, Yliki, and Marathon) currently hold a total of 390 million cubic meters of water, according to Kathimerini. This corresponds to 26.6% of their total capacity — meaning they are nearly 74% empty.

Experts note that two to three consecutive years of drought are enough to cut the lakes’ reserves in half, as happened in the 1990s and again during the 2022–2025 period. For instance, the Mornos reservoir was above average levels until 2022 but dropped by around 54% due to the drought that followed.

The worst day on record for Attica’s water reserves was November 13, 1993, when the supply lakes were 92% empty.

Another factor affecting the reserves is reduced snowfall. During the winter of 2024–2025, snow cover in the mountains of the Mornos area was 20% lower than the average for the period 2005–2024.

EYDAP is preparing a plan to prevent Attica’s residents from facing water shortages, to be announced in the coming weeks. The plan is expected to include measures such as desalination and water reuse, particularly for irrigation and industrial purposes.
