The Ministry of Transport is examining the pilot ban of truck traffic during peak hours (07:00–10:00) on Kifisos Avenue to reduce traffic congestion, according to Kathimerini.
On the road, where more than 260,000 vehicles pass every day, the percentage of trucks during peak hours is 8%, but their presence increases congestion by 20%. The problem of traffic congestion on the road is significant, as in 2024, 6.5 million hours were lost in traffic on Kifisos, which corresponds to an annual loss of €80–€90 million for the Greek economy.
At the same time, the Ministry of Transport will begin on Sunday the “removal” of trolleybus wires from Piraeus, which will be replaced by electric buses.
Transport planners told Kathimerini that for the measure to function, it must be combined with parallel bans on other roads (e.g., Attiki Odos, Schisto Avenue), compliance with delivery schedules (which should not take place during peak hours), and coordination for exceptions for the transport of perishable goods.
At the same time, the Ministry of Transport will begin on Sunday the “removal” of trolleybus wires from Piraeus, which will, for the most part, be replaced by electric buses. Of the 143 kilometers of the total network, approximately 70% will be dismantled. Wires will be maintained only on long straight sections where certain trolleybus lines will be relocated, aiming to increase frequency and keep the system functional.
