The first US-Iran talks took place in Switzerland today, with Iran speaking of “progress,” while the talks will continue throughout the week so that a final peace agreement can be reached within 60 days.
A joint statement by the mediating countries, Qatar and Pakistan, said the United States and Iran had agreed on a roadmap toward reaching a final agreement. Technical talks will continue for the rest of the week at the Swiss mountain resort of Bürgenstock, which is owned by Qatar, according to the statement released by Qatar’s Foreign Ministry.
On Saturday, Israel launched attacks in several areas of southern Lebanon and killed more than 16 people.
The parties agreed on a mechanism to end hostilities in Lebanon and opened a line of communication to help ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the disputed strait, the statement said.
The talks followed Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to Israel’s continued attacks in Lebanon, despite the ceasefire agreed on Friday.
They were followed by Donald Trump’s threats to resume attacks if Iran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also repeated his earlier threat that the United States would take control of the sea route and possibly impose its own transit fee.
