Cyprus is not at risk of Iranian strikes as long as the British bases on the island are not used against the Islamic Republic, Iranian diplomatic sources told Politis Cyprus.
According to the report, the sources confirmed that diplomatic channels between Nicosia and Tehran remain open and “active,” with discussions covering several issues, including the British bases on the island.
The comments come a day after a Financial Times report, citing Iranian officials, said Iran was considering expanding the conflict to European territories used against the country, including Cyprus.
The Financial Times reported that Iran was considering strikes on US facilities in southeastern European countries, including Bulgaria and Cyprus.
Asked about the report, the same sources said statements from Iranian sources are not always “reliable” and often reflect speculation by officials in “response to threats from the other side.”
“Specifically, in the case of Cyprus, the diplomatic channel is very active and the parties are discussing various issues, including the British Bases in Cyprus. As long as there is no hostile action from the Bases against Iran, nothing will happen,” the Iranian sources said.
“The Iranian authorities are aware of the concerns of the Cypriot side regarding people on the island who live and work within the boundaries of these Bases. But we should not overlook the fact that the lives of Iranian citizens could also be put at risk if these Bases are used against Iran,” they added.
