The investigation is ongoing into the death of a 16-year-old girl outside a club on Dekeleon Street in Gazi in the early hours of Sunday. According to witness statements, the girl is believed to have consumed alcohol and felt unwell inside the venue. As she staggered, she reportedly fell forcefully against a glass panel. She then went outside to get some air, where she is said to have collapsed.
At 1:50 a.m., the emergency service (EKAV) received a call for assistance. When the ambulance crew arrived, paramedics began resuscitation efforts, as the girl had lost consciousness. The procedure continued for about an hour and a half at Evangelismos Hospital, where she was transported, until she was pronounced dead from pulmonary edema, according to forensic examiners. Toxicology test results ordered as part of the investigation are still pending.
The Hellenic Police (EL.AS.) and Evangelismos Hospital have issued conflicting accounts over whether the police were informed by the hospital after the girl’s death, as claimed by the hospital and the Ministry of Health, or by the girl’s father the following day, as claimed by EL.AS.
That same night, EKAV received three additional calls related to alcohol intoxication on the same street where the club is located.
The timing of the notification appears to have affected the police’s ability to carry out an immediate raid on the venue to collect bottle samples and investigate a possible link between the alcohol and the girl’s death. Had the police been informed earlier, the investigation could have begun sooner rather than at a later stage, as it ultimately did.
According to sources cited by Kathimerini, EKAV did not notify the police immediately, as it had no jurisdiction to do so. At the time, the girl’s death had not yet been confirmed, and there was no indication of criminal activity — such as a gunshot wound — which would typically prompt EKAV to alert law enforcement.
It is worth noting that EKAV received three additional calls that same night for alcohol intoxication cases on the same street, involving three adults who were also taken to Evangelismos Hospital.
