The International Criminal Court (ICC) seeks arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, according to CNN.
The ICC also seeks warrants for two other top Hamas leaders, Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri (known as Mohammed Deif), leader of the Al Qassem Brigades, and Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’ political leader, as well as for Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant.
Benny Gantz, one of the three main members of Israel’s war cabinet and a key political rival of Netanyahu before the war, stated on Saturday that he would leave the coalition government if the Prime Minister did not present a post-war governance plan for Gaza by June 8th. Yoav Gallant, also a top member of the war cabinet and Israel’s Defense Minister, has exerted similar pressure.
Gantz and Gallant are asking the Prime Minister to choose between leaving Gaza under Israeli military control post-war, as desired by Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners, or transferring power to a Palestinian administration with international support instead of Hamas, which Gantz emphasizes is not the Palestinian Authority led by Mahmoud Abbas.
Gantz and Gallant have accused Netanyahu of prioritizing his political survival over national security.
At the same time, tens of thousands of Israelis protested in Tel Aviv on Saturday, demanding Netanyahu’s resignation due to his poor handling of the war and failure to bring back the hostages. Family members of the hostages gathered outside the Israeli army headquarters in Tel Aviv, urging Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot, an observer member of the war council, to replace Netanyahu.
The leader of the Israeli opposition, Yair Lapid, also joined the protest, promising to work towards the fall of Netanyahu’s government and the return of the hostages.
