Cyprus is hosting on April 23 and 24 the Informal Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the European Union, as well as an Informal EU Summit with Regional Partners, with the participation of nearly all European leaders.
According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Yiannis Antoniou, their presence sends a strong message that the Republic of Cyprus is a safe country.
The main topics of discussion will be geopolitical developments, European security, and energy sufficiency. The EU’s readiness to respond to crises is expected to be examined, along with issues related to Article 42(7) of the Treaty on European Union concerning mutual defence. At the same time, the President of the European Commission is expected to present proposals to address the impact on the energy sector.
Due to the event, heightened security measures are in place, including temporary road closures in Nicosia, Larnaca, and Ayia Napa.
Among those attending the summit will be French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, while President Nikos Christodoulides will also hold a bilateral meeting with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda.
Due to the event, heightened security measures are in force, including temporary road closures in Nicosia, Larnaca, and Ayia Napa, as well as navigation restrictions around Ayia Napa Marina.
At the same time, livestock farmers are holding a protest at the Rizoelia roundabout over foot-and-mouth disease and compensation payments.
