Police conducted another series of raids at US universities yesterday, resulting in the arrest of dozens of students, primarily in New York and Los Angeles, as they marched in solidarity with Palestine.
At the University of Texas at Dallas, police dismantled a protest camp yesterday and arrested at least 17 individuals for “illegal trespassing,” as reported by the institution.
Law enforcement also apprehended several protesters at Fordham University in New York, where they dispersed an encampment established earlier in the day on campus. The police reported that approximately 300 individuals had already been arrested at two university sites in New York.
As of April 30th, occupation was ongoing at least 85 campuses across the US, with arrests made by police in at least 30 of them.
In the past two weeks, demonstrations in support of Palestinians have increased across the US, spanning from California to New York. The surge in protests evokes memories of the movement against the Vietnam War for many observers.
Despite the 1,300+ arrests of students across the US since April 18th, there appears to be no indication that students intend to relent.
According to Politico, Democrats fear that the sit-ins will be “political poison” for President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign. Thus far, Biden has refrained from commenting on the matter.
For Biden, condemning the protests could risk alienating potential new voters, while refraining from doing so might strengthen the narrative put forth by his opponent, Donald Trump, that he is responsible for the country’s internal turmoil.
