In the US, people watch more than 1 billion hours of YouTube videos daily on average through television, making it the most popular medium for watching YouTube, ahead of mobile phones, according to the annual message from the company’s CEO, Neal Mohan.
The platform, which turns 20 this year and has been owned by Google (Alphabet) since 2006, has been the #1 streaming service on US TVs for the past two years. YouTube TV, a paid service offering live TV from over 100 channels (available only in the US), has accumulated over 8 million subscribers. Other paid subscription plans, such as YouTube Music and YouTube Premium, now have more than 100 million subscribers.
Last year, YouTube became the most used platform for listening to podcasts in the US.
Additionally, according to the same announcement, YouTube became the most used platform for podcasts in the US last year. The company also shared data on its platform’s role in the US elections: On election day alone, more than 45 million Americans watched election-related content on YouTube, leading some analysts to call the 2024 elections the “YouTube elections.”
