Hackers stole $6.3 billion from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, in an attack that analysts say is the biggest crypto theft in history and could force investors to reassess the risks associated with holding digital assets.

North Korean hackers were behind the attack, according to U.S. blockchain analytics firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis. The attackers targeted Binance’s digital wallets across ten different blockchain networks and managed to transfer most of the funds in about 20 minutes, TRM Labs said.

Binance also said that user deposits were unaffected and that it expects to restore withdrawal services within two days.

Binance said it worked with other companies to freeze assets affected by the attack, with approximately $3 billion traced so far. It did not clarify what happened to the remaining $3.3 billion, while the company said it would cover “all losses from the cyberattack.”

Binance also said that user deposits were unaffected and that it expects to restore withdrawal services within the next 48 hours.

An initial investigation indicated that the breach may have originated from a compromised laptop belonging to a Binance engineer. Through the device, the attacker appears to have gained access to one of the company’s systems and carried out unauthorized withdrawals.
