A Greek air defense system Patriot in Saudi Arabia shot down 2 Iranian missiles that were heading towards refineries of the area, as announced by the Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias.
“In this way the Greek battery proves how combat-capable it is and what experience has been acquired all this time. But also, indirectly but clearly, it protects also the standard of living of Greek citizens and of European citizens. The continuous increase of the price of oil constitutes a huge threat for the standard of living of Greeks, of Europeans, of the inhabitants of the whole planet,” stated Nikos Dendias among others.
To a question of journalists whether it is “involvement” of Greece in the Israel–USA war against Iran, the government spokesperson, Pavlos Marinakis, answered that it is not “involvement of Greece”, but a “defensive action”.
The participation of Greece in the air defense of Saudi Arabia is part of the international initiative “Integrated Air and Missile Defence Concept”.
“The situation in the region is given. The Greek battery did not make an attack. There was an aggressive action, which was αντιμετωπίστηκε defensively (…). When you αντιμετωπίζεις an attack, you do defense,” said Pavlos Marinakis.
The missiles are there since 2021 as Greece participates in the air defense of the country for the protection of the installations of the oil company Saudi Armco and it is part of the implementation of the international initiative “Integrated Air and Missile Defence Concept” (IAMD Concept).
It is an international framework of cooperation for integrated anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense, which coordinates means (such as Patriot), sensors and forces from different countries for the protection against threats such as ballistic missiles, drones and aircraft.
