A leading member of the Greek Mafia, according to media reports, was killed in Chalandri when two individuals, who had stolen a vehicle earlier, waited for him and then shot him as he was leaving a private clinic. After the murder, they abandoned and burned the car in the Patisia area of Chalandri.
The bullets from the Kalashnikov used by the attackers to kill the man, known by the alias “Thamnakias,” also hit the building across from the clinic. By “luck,” no employees were injured, nor was a woman whose car was also hit by gunfire.
The latest murder of a Greek Mafia member occurred in January 2024, when unknown assailants executed V. Zambounis at a gas station in Neos Kosmos.
The Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrisochoidis, attributes the murder to a settling of scores between members of the Greek Mafia, with authorities investigating the motives, as the victim had several conflicts.
Meanwhile, according to authorities, the vehicle was not completely burned, which may assist in the investigation.
This is the 26th murder, at least, attributed to a “contract killing” in Greece over the past 7 years. In addition to the most recent one (Zambounis), there was the murder of Vasilis Roumpetis on June 7 (along with his godfather, Dionysis Mouzakitis), with whom Zambounis had a feud, and authorities are investigating whether there is a connection between the two murders.
