Greece ranks last in the EU for checking reliability of online information

Greece ranked last among the EU’s 27 member states for the share of people who check the reliability of information they encounter online, according to Eurostat data for 2025.

Just 9.78% of people aged 16 to 74 in Greece said they had checked the accuracy of information or content they encountered on news websites or social media that they considered false or questionable. The EU average stood at 29.16%, almost three times the rate in Greece. Greece’s figure also fell significantly from 18.66% in 2023.

Ireland recorded the highest rate among EU member states, at 63.64%.

The figures do not measure the share of people who regularly fact-check or verify every piece of information they encounter online. They specifically refer to people who came across information or content they considered false or questionable and then checked its accuracy.
