Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the Governor of Central Macedonia, will be Greece’s Commissioner at the European Commission.
Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis announced that the Prime Minister has already informed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about the appointment.
“Apostolos Tzitzikostas brings extensive experience from institutional roles both in Greece and across Europe, including his tenure as President of the European Committee of the Regions in 2020. Additionally, as a young leader who has been elected three times with over 50% of the vote, he demonstrates strong popular support,” Marinakis said.
Since 2019, the position of Greece’s Commissioner at the European Commission has been held by Margaritis Schinas
“The choice of Mr. Tzitzikostas will be a politically significant one, highlighting the importance of Macedonia and Northern Greece for Europe as a region with strategic positioning, connectivity, and geopolitical relevance for both the Balkans and Southeastern Europe, as well as the northeastern tip of the Mediterranean,” he emphasized.
He added that today at 6:00 PM, the Prime Minister will meet with Mr. Tzitzikostas at the Maximus Mansion.
The nomination process is as follows: Member state leaders have until the end of August to submit their proposals. Subsequently, the President of the European Commission will start assembling the Commission and assigning portfolios. Once this is done, the European Parliament will review the new Commissioners through hearings scheduled for late September and October.
In theory, the Parliament has the authority to reject candidates. If a nominee is rejected, the respective country must propose a new Commissioner. The aim is to have the new European Commission fully established by November 1.
