Greece since 2000 has among the worst performances in the international PISA competition (Programme for International Student Assessment), a program of the OECD that evaluates whether students have the knowledge and the skills that are applied in society.

The competition evaluates the level of students at the end of lower secondary school, when they are 15 years old that is, in mathematics, in reading comprehension and in natural sciences, while it takes place every three years.

In 2000, in 31 countries, Greece ranked 25th in reading comprehension, 25th in natural sciences and 28th in mathematics. In 2003, in 41 countries, it was evaluated 30th in reading comprehension, 30th in natural sciences, 32nd in mathematics. In the previous competition, in 2022 with participation of 81 countries, our country ranked 41st in reading comprehension, 44th in natural sciences and 44th in mathematics. The results of the latest competition, in 2025, will be announced next September.

The PISA competition concerns students of 15 years who are examined in reading, mathematics and natural sciences.

The educators, but also the school principals explain to “Kathimerini” that for this the Greek education system is to blame, which does not adopt the philosophy of the competition.

They themselves state that they do not know much about the competition as there are not the tools, however they want to learn.

Indicatively, 48.3% of the educators state that they are interested “very” or “very much” to learn more about PISA, while among education advisors the percentage reaches 82%. However, only one in four feels that he or she knows the survey well.
