Apostolos Christou won the silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke at the Paris Olympic Games yesterday. Hungarian swimmer Hubert Kos overtook Christou in the final 50 meters, claiming gold. Christou finished with a time of 1:54.82, while Kos won with 1:54.26. Swiss swimmer Roman Mityukov took third place.

Today, Greece added two more medals to its tally in the same event.

Antonis Papakonstantinou and Petros Gaïdatzis secured the bronze medal in the lightweight men’s double sculls with a time of 6:13.44. The gold medal went to Irish rowers Fintan McCarthy and Paul O’Donovan, while Italians Stefano Oppo and Gabriel Soares won the silver.

Apostolos Christou became the first Greek swimmer to win a medal since the 1896 Olympics.

Shortly afterward, Milena Kontou and Zoe Fitsiu secured the bronze medal in the lightweight women’s double sculls in rowing. The gold went to British rowers Emily Craig and Imogen Grant, and Romanian athletes Gianina Elena van Groningen and Ionela Livia Cozmiuc took silver.

The Greek pair executed a remarkable comeback in the final meters, overtaking the New Zealand rowers to claim third place and nearly surpassing the Romanian team.

Following Apostolos Christou’s silver medal yesterday and the two rowing medals today, one for men and women, Greece has won four medals. Theodoros Tsilidis, who won the bronze medal in judo on Wednesday, was the first Greek athlete to secure a medal at this year’s Olympics.
