Germany: Scholz dismisses Finance Minister – Potential early elections in 2025

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner, a member of the governing coalition (SPD, Greens, FDP) from the FDP.

The final break occurred after Scholz requested that Lindner work to reduce energy costs, stimulate investments, and continue support for Ukraine. Lindner disagreed, maintaining a stance on strict fiscal rules and advocating for tax cuts.

“Minister Lindner has too often blocked legislation inappropriately,” Scholz said in a statement. “He has too often engaged in petty partisan tactics and repeatedly broken my trust.”

A vote of confidence determines whether members of parliament express trust in the government.

“Olaf Scholz has long failed to recognize the need for a new economic awakening in our country,” Lindner stated. “For some time, he has downplayed the economic concerns of our citizens.”

Lindner’s dismissal effectively pushes the FDP out of the governing coalition, prompting Scholz to call for a vote of confidence, scheduled for January 15. If, as expected, Scholz loses this vote, early elections will be held by March.
