Tomorrow marks one year of war in Gaza and the deadliest conflict for Palestinians in the history of Israeli-Palestinian wars.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas and other Palestinian groups launched an attack on Israel, killing 1,139 Israelis and foreign nationals. A total of 251 people were taken hostage, 97 of which are still held in Gaza.
Since the beginning of the Israeli invasion on October 27, 2023, more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed, and over 95,000 have been injured, with more than 50% being women and children.
Every hour in Gaza, 5 people are killed, 2 of whom are children.

Hamas announced that its attack was, among other reasons, a response to the ongoing Israeli occupation, the blockade of Gaza, the expansion of settlements, and Israel’s disregard for international law.

Buildings: 63% (151.265) have been damaged or destroyed.
Hospitals: Only 17 out of 36 are still partially operational, 464 health facilities have been struck, 727 healthcare workers have been killed, and 113 ambulances have been destroyed.
Schools and Universities: 85% (564) of schools have been hit, and all 19 Universities have suffered severe damages, with 80% completely destroyed.
Other infrastructure: 67% of water and sewage facilities, 65% of roads, and 65% of arable land have been destroyed or damaged.

The bombings have produced 37 million tons of rubble (300kg per square meter). Its clearance is estimated to take 14 years.
The rubble contains hazardous materials such as asbestos, heavy metals, flammable substances, and dangerous chemicals, which can seep into the soil and contaminate the water.
The IDF also used prohibited white phosphorus in Gaza, leading to long-term impacts on people’s health and the environment.

In October 2023, the IDF dropped around 25,000 tons of munitions on Gaza, about 1.5 times the power of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in WWII.
In the first four months of the war, an estimated 652,552 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) were released into the atmosphere, with over 99% attributed to Isreael’s military operations in Gaza.
This amount surpasses the annual CO2 emissions of 26 climate-vulnerable countries, such as Vanuaty and Greenland.

Since October 7, 2023, over 719 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by IDF attacks, with more than 5,700 injured.
Israel has demolished over 1,697 Palestinian structures, primarily homes, displacing more than 4,233 people. The West Bank has a population of over 3.3 million Palestinians.
Israel aims to expand its illegal settlements in the West Bank, where over 700,000 Israelis currently reside.
The West Bank and Gaza Strip are Palestinian territories recognized by 146 of the 193 UN member states (75%) as the State of Palestine.

At least 130 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reported that 12% of the journalists in Gaza have been killed, with a mortality rate higher than that of infantry soldiers.
In 2023, 75% of all journalists killed worldwide died in the first two months of the war, and during this period, more journalists were killed than in the entire two-decade Vietnam War.
