The left-wing coalition “New Popular Front,” led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s “Untamed France” as its largest party, won the most seats (182) in the second round of the French parliamentary elections. Three other parties are part of this coalition: the Socialists (PS), the Communists, and the Greens (EELV).
President Emmanuel Macron’s coalition, “Ensemble,” came second with 163 seats, while Marine Le Pen’s far-right “National Rally” placed third with 143 seats, despite earlier polls favoring her for first place.
Voter turnout in the second round of elections was 59.71% by 17:00, compared to 59.39% in the first round.
Thousands took to the streets to celebrate the outcome. However, the inability of any party to gather an absolute majority (289 seats) brings a period of “political uncertainty,” according to international media [1], [2], [3], as coalitions will have to form a joint government.
French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced that he will be resigning, but it remains unclear who will be the next prime minister. The election outcome suggests that Macron may need to govern with a prime minister from the New Popular Front, a rare arrangement known as “cohabitation.”
However, members of Macron’s party have consistently stated that they will refuse to cooperate with the “Untamed France” party, arguing that it is equally extreme as Le Pen’s party.
