French President Emmanuel Macron presented a plan—which the United States opposes—that calls for the deployment of an international force in post-war Gaza under UN auspices, the establishment of a transitional government led by the Palestinian Authority, and the disarmament of Hamas.

“It is time to end the war in Gaza, the massacres and the deaths”, Macron said during a speech at the opening of a special summit in the UN General Assembly hall on Monday (22.09). “It is time to deliver justice to the Palestinian people and, therefore, to recognize the State of Palestine in Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem”.

The recognition by France and the other countries took place yesterday as part of a special UN session on Gaza.

In response to the wave of recognitions, Israel has threatened to expand illegal settlements and ultimately annex the West Bank, while the United States has also voiced objections.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned: “Nothing can justify developments in the West Bank that pose an existential threat to the two-state solution”.

Meanwhile, Arab and Muslim leaders, including Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, are set to meet Donald Trump in New York on the sidelines of the UN summit to discuss their own plan for a stabilization force in Gaza under the Palestinian Authority.
