The Karditsa Prosecutor’s Office has decided to send former Thessaly regional governor Kostas Agorastos and 17 others to trial over Storm Daniel.
The 17 include former Karditsa deputy regional governor Kostas Nousias, then-mayor of Palamas Giorgos Sakellariou and officials from various public services.
The floods killed 17 people and caused extensive damage in September 2023, including in areas of Karditsa such as Palamas and in Magnesia. Nine people died in Karditsa, seven in Magnesia and one in Fthiotida.
Storm Daniel also hit other countries, particularly Libya, where 11,500 people were killed, as well as Turkey, where seven people died, and Bulgaria, where five were killed.
Agorastos and the other 17 face misdemeanour charges of negligent homicide and causing a flood resulting in death.
The 18 were referred to trial by the Karditsa Prosecutor’s Office following the completion of a preliminary investigation into negligent acts or omissions that led to the deaths of 17 people. In July 2025, prosecutors had called on them to provide explanations regarding three alleged offences related to Storm Daniel.
