The Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria was officially opened this morning, 27 August, in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The extension includes five new stations: Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini and Mikra.
From 15:00 today, the network will have 18 stations across 14.4 km, served by a fleet of 33 automated trains. The new extension is expected to carry around 63,000 passengers a day.
It is also expected to remove around 12,000 cars from the roads each day, reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 25 tonnes daily.
The Thessaloniki Metro returns to its regular operating hours today and will run 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays during the Thessaloniki International Fair.
From this afternoon, the metro returns to its regular schedule: Monday to Thursday from 05:15 to 00:30, Friday and Saturday from 05:15 to 02:00, and Sunday from 05:15 to 00:30. During the Thessaloniki International Fair, it will operate around the clock on Fridays and Saturdays.
The journey from Mikra to Neos Sidirodromikos Stathmos, the two ends of the line, will take around 25 minutes. A standard ticket costs €0.60, while the reduced fare is €0.30.
Plans for the next decade include extending the metro to northwestern Thessaloniki, covering densely populated areas such as Stavroupoli, Ampelokipoi, Menemeni, Kordelio, Evosmos and Ilioupoli.
