The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection is setting up five new “rapid response stations” (three main and two auxiliary) to address flooding in high-risk areas of Attica, according to a report by “Kathimerini.”
These teams will include personnel from the Fire Department, Armed Forces, and Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK), equipped with tools such as pumps and boats to handle the impacts of flooding. They will be deployed immediately when meteorologists predict extreme rainfall.
According to Minister Vassilis Kikilias, the goal is to ensure adequate response and coordination between the various services, as well as with volunteers who can support these units based on their availability.
The three main stations will cover Western Attica, Moschato-Kifissos, and the northern suburbs, while the two auxiliary stations will serve Nea Makri-Eastern Attica and the southern suburbs.
The three main stations will be located at the 1st Special Forest Operations Unit in Magoula for Western Attica, the 1st Fire Station of Piraeus (Rentis) for the Kifissos and Moschato areas, and the Acharnes Fire Station (Olympic Village) for the northern suburbs. The two auxiliary stations will be at the 12th Fire Station in Pallini for Nea Makri and Eastern Attica and the 8th Fire Station in Elliniko for the southern suburbs.
Approximately 220,000 people live in these high-risk flood areas, which include about 293 schools, 21 healthcare facilities, and 46,650 buildings, of which 19,319 ground-floor spaces are used as residences, shops, and workshops.
