A wildfire broke out yesterday in Derveni, in Oreokastro, near Thessaloniki, leaving two people dead. One of the victims was a 66-year-old man, while the second has not yet been formally identified but is believed to be his 12-year-old son, who had been missing since the fire. The 66-year-old’s wife is being treated in a Thessaloniki hospital for burns and is not in life-threatening condition.
The fire broke out in low vegetation for reasons that remain unknown and spread from Derveni toward the settlement of Liti. The fire front eventually reached the family’s home, which was destroyed.
The wildfire spread rapidly, and firefighting efforts were extremely difficult due to the strong winds blowing across the area. At the same time, the region was under a high wildfire risk alert (Category 3).
The fire front remained active this morning, but according to the Fire Service, it is gradually being brought under control.
As the fire intensified, two emergency alerts were issued through the 112 warning system. The first, sent at 3:40 p.m., informed residents about the wildfire in the area, while the second, issued at 4:40 p.m., urged those in Liti to evacuate as a precaution and head toward the local sports field.
The fire front remained active this morning, but according to the Fire Service, it is gradually being brought under control. A total of 115 firefighters, including three forest commando units, 36 fire engines, and volunteers, were deployed, supported by 10 firefighting aircraft and three helicopters.
