The newly established far-right group Patriots for Europe has become the third-largest political group in the European Parliament today, with 84 MEPs succeeding the now-disbanded Identity and Democracy (ID).

It was created by the far-right Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the far-right Austrian Herbert Kickl, and the nationalist Czech Andrej Babis. The group’s president is the 28-year-old French far-right politician Jordan Bardella.

As a result, the new group demotes the “European Conservatives and Reformists” to 4th place. It consists of 78 MEPs and is prominently led by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party, which previously prevented Orbán’s “Fidesz” party from joining their ranks.

 A. Latinopoulou’s “Voice of Reason” party, is the only Greek party that has joined the group

The new political group includes 15 parties from 12 EU countries: France, Hungary, Italy, Czech Republic, Austria, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Czech Republic, Greece, Latvia, and Denmark. Most parties were either part of the Identity and Democracy group or independent of the European Parliament. Nevertheless, the group successfully attracted three MEPs from the European People’s Party, Renew Europe, and the European Conservatives and Reformists.

The French National Rally is the largest party within the group, with 30 MEPs, whilst Matteo Salvini’s Lega, was the largest party within the Identity and Democracy group.
