A survey conducted in seven European countries reveals that strong majorities—ranging from 65% in France to 82% in Spain—believe that the attacks by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, were unjustified.

However, only 43% in Germany and 65% in Spain think that the subsequent attacks by Israel on Gaza were justified.

Similarly, between 47% in Denmark and 49% in Germany, 50% in France and the United Kingdom, and 68% in Spain believe that Israel’s attacks on Lebanon were unjustified.

The YouGov survey was conducted among 9,300 adults in Denmark, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and Sweden.

The attacks by Israel against Iran were also considered unjustified in all seven countries, with responses ranging from 45% in Denmark to 68% in Spain.

The EU has been divided on the Gaza conflict, with countries like Spain and Ireland officially recognizing a Palestinian state earlier this year, while others, including Germany, assert that supporting Israel’s security is a central element of their foreign policy.
