The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST) has won the European Museum Academy’s 2026 Art Museum Award, presented on Saturday, September 26, in Alicante, Spain.
EMST was selected from six finalists by a nine-member international jury. The shortlist also included the Rijksmuseum and FENIX Museum of Migration in the Netherlands, Hastings Contemporary in the UK, Museum Gugging in Austria, and the National Gallery of Slovenia.
Five other museums were shortlisted, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the National Gallery of Slovenia.
The award criteria include social justice, participation, inclusion, gender equality, racial justice, community building, sustainability, and resilience, with an emphasis on museums that place art in new contexts and build meaningful relationships with their audiences.
The jury highlighted EMST artistic director Katerina Gregos and her team, noting the “originality and ambition” with which they have put their curatorial vision into practice, as well as exhibitions that encourage critical thinking. It also described the museum as a “valuable cultural bridge” between Greek contemporary art, the Southeastern Mediterranean, and the international art world.
The Greek Ministry of Culture linked the award to the museum’s renewal, international outreach, and socially focused programme over the past five years, which has addressed themes including politics, society, history, and the environment.
