Deputy Infrastructure and Transport Minister Giorgos Kotsiras is bringing a bill on electric scooter use to a vote today, with the main measure being a ban on their use by people under the age of 17.

This is because, as he explained, accident rates involving scooters are higher among people under 17.

“We are introducing an initiative aimed primarily at protecting minors. We prioritised this need because statistics showed that accident rates, including serious accidents, are particularly high among people under 17,” he said.

The maximum permitted speed for scooters is 25 km/h, and they are banned from roads with speed limits above 50 km/h.

The other three measures are: a ban on the sale, rental and provision of scooters to people under 17, tougher penalties for Highway Code violations involving scooters, and mandatory insurance for both scooters and users.

The stricter framework is expected to come into force during the summer. “We have also scheduled other amendments to the Highway Code, but we prioritised these provisions on electric scooters because we judged that the protection of minors could not wait any longer,” he added.

He also recalled that the basic obligations for all electric scooter users remain in force, including wearing a helmet and the ban on using a mobile phone or headphones while riding.
